This post will explain how to get the best quotes and estimates for the work the property requires.
First be very specific about what work you want to get done. Be very specific with this.
Write down every single item that needs doing.
Once you know what you need to have done, find the companies who can get it sorted.
If you have contacts that would be a great place to start, beyond that I would start my search on sites like Trustpilot and Checkatrade. On these portals, you can find a list of companies for the particular job you need doing with reviews and contact details all in one place.
Get three quotes and estimates for each job (plumbing, electrical etc.) Make sure the quotes or estimates you receive are detailed and clear about what they are quoting. It is best to ask the companies to quote for something all in and specify the type of products you want using if those items need to be defined.
You don't want them to quote for laminate countertops if you wish to have marble. Nor do you want them to quote for golden taps if you just need something durable and functional.
The range of quotes will provide you with a useful guide as to how much the works will cost, and you can then determine if the work is worth undertaking, if it only works if you can buy the property for much less. Maybe you are one of the lucky ones, and your idea of costs in your head was right on the spot.
Extra note: Don't sign up with a contractor until the deal for the purchase is completed!
Make sure you know what you are getting quotes and estimates for. Get at least three quotes from well-reputed companies. Lastly, don't sign up to the work until the deal has completed or at least exchanged.
